Where petals make waves, through art and diversity

About Me

The Name

SomethingWithFlowers

While, as an artist, I go by the moniker “SomethingWithFlowers, you may be surprised by the subtle floral theming across the site and published presence.

Tell me more... The origin of my username, and how Ive chosen to brand myself, is intended to represent who I am as a person, and my commitment to a good bit. When I decided to go by a username that was something other than my real name, I posted on social media to ask for recommendations. Someone made the suggestion that I should choose something with flowers, as in some sort of floral-y nickname. Upon discovering the availability of the username “SomethingWithFlowers" for someone who had long been teased for taking things too literally, a persona was born. This was during a time when I learned a lot about myself, and actually chose to get back into art in some capacity as an activity of enjoyment, and ultimately led me to this whole endeavour, personally and artistically. So it felt fitting to keep it.

The Artist

Self Advocacy

Born and raised in rural Canada, currently residing in one of Canadas largest cities with my faithful dog, cat, and lizard. My favourite things about life are the things that make you smile; whether thats the ocean, a good comedy bit, the stars, memes, feeling seen or understood, or the flowers.

Tell me more... I am big on intersectionality, self expression and self advocacy, and taking care of each other and the world we are in. While some of these are uncomfortable and require constant learning and reevaluation, a lot of the time it can be done through humour and good will, and thats what I hope to perpetuate with my art and my general contribution to the world.

The Medium

Art-revival

I grew up watching my mother and father participate or indulge in many different art forms, whether that be sculpture or cinema, painting pictures or miniatures. I enjoyed making art in many forms as a child, but stopped making the time exclusively to keep up with it for a number of years.

Tell me more... In my ‘art-revival as I consider it, I primarily work with digital illustration, gouache and watercolour painting, polymer clay and sculpting, and mixed media. I have done commissions for online branding or character designs and portraits, such as emotes on platforms like Twitch. I also dabble in animation, writing, video-editing, music, and crochet, and hope to find myself with opportunities to experience ceramics, stained glass, 3D, and other forms as ideas and chances arise. My favourite subjects, as is not hard to see, are ocean creatures - predominantly whales - and video game characters, assorted flora and fauna, things that have striking colours or patterns, or things that inspire a giggle or sigh.

The Audience

For Artists and Art-lovers alike

In addition to using this platform to share my own art with a larger audience, I hope to further my impact. I do this by encouraging people to take risks, and by practicing their art regardless of the reasons or pressure to perform at a certain level.

Tell me more... Artists should not be afraid to seek counsel of the people and resources available to further their skills, and engage in community for the betterment of themselves and those around them. I wouldnt be here where I am today, creatively, spiritually, mentally, if I had not opened myself up to trying, to failing, to getting back up, and to the support and investment of those around me, and I hope to spur that kind of pervasive change in others. I hope to do so through sharing of resources I find and consult on my journey, with my thoughts as time and energy allow, and through the curation of an All-Friends All-Levels Art Community on Discord.
